Last update :

Doai Station is an unmanned station on the Joetsu Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East) located on the border of Gunma and Niigata prefectures. Known as the "Number One Mole Station in Japan" because its platform is located deep underground, a full 70 meters below ground level.

The atmosphere of the downward line platform, far from sunlight, is reminiscent of a secret base. Possibly because it's been chosen as a filming location for movies, tourists often outnumber actual passengers. From the platform, one must ascend a staggering 462 steps to reach the ticket gates on the surface. As one ascends the stairs, the cool underground air gradually mingles with the warmer air above.

Doai Station's building is notable for its sharply angled triangular roof, inspired by Mt. Tanigawa, and has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Stations of Kanto." Since it's an unmanned station, passengers should obtain a boarding certificate. Train services are infrequent, with only about 5 trains per day in each direction. Be sure to check the timetable thoroughly before visiting.
