Ichijoin
A historic temple lodging in Mount Koya, offering refined spaces and heartfelt hospitality with exquisite shojin ryori.
A sub-temple of Kongobu-ji, the head temple of Mount Koya, Ichijoin boasts more than 1,100 years of tradition since its founding in the Heian period. Centrally located in Mount Koya, it is within walking distance of major landmarks such as Kongobu-ji and Danjo Garan, making it highly convenient. Known for its unique temple character combined with hospitality rivaling that of top-class inns, it is one of the most popular choices among the 52 shukubo (temple lodgings) in Mount Koya.
Guest rooms range from simple accommodations for solo travelers to luxurious suites. In January 2023, the two-story main building was renovated, reducing the original ten rooms to just four spacious ones. Each room now features a bedroom and a hinoki cypress bath, along with large windows overlooking the gardens and table seating. Each room has its own distinct charm and character.
Meals are rooted in furemai ryori, a Koyasan tradition of monks serving monks with the utmost hospitality. Guests can enjoy heartfelt shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) crafted with seasonal ingredients and meticulous presentation. There is also a large communal bath filled with hot water from Mount Koya’s spring water, offering a soothing experience.
During their stay, guests can take part in activities such as calligraphy sutra copying (shakyo), Buddha image tracing (shabutsu), and Ajikan, a meditation practice unique to Shingon Buddhism. Before breakfast, visitors are welcome to join the monks in their morning services. Until checkout, guests can also admire the temple’s splendid dry landscape and pond gardens, as well as Buddhist paintings and fusuma (sliding door) art within the complex.
