Ryokan Adumaya

A celebrated ryokan in Yunomine Onsen, an ancient hot spring town in Kumano, loved by many writers and artists.

Last update :

André Malraux, a French novelist and minister of cultural affairs, praised this ryokan as a Japanese authentic ryokan. Since its establishment in the Edo period, it has been a favorite of many writers and artists, including Kyoshi Takahama and Tsutomu Mizukami, and became one of the most celebrated ryokans in Wakayama Prefecture.

Yunomine Onsen has long been popular as a place of purification for pilgrims to the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. The Onsen’s famous private stone bath called Tsuboyu,is registered as a World Heritage site. Adumaya has 22 guest rooms in an authentic Japanese building right in front of the Tsuboyu. All rooms are tastefully decorated, including a special room with a private open-air bath.

Their hot spring water flows from three private sources, and the sulfur water contains sodium hydro carbonate and chloride. There are the tranquil "maki-buro" (cedar bath), where the smell of wood and sulfur join together, and the "mushi-buro" bath, similar to a sauna with hot spring steam.

Dinner is proudly served with select local dishes; an onsen shabu shabu with Mikumano Beef, and for breakfast, onsen porridge and yudofu (tofu).
