Kawatoyo Honten
A long-standing restaurant where you can enjoy Narita’s famous unagi, a must-try local specialty for temple pilgrims.
Unagi (freshwater eel) has been loved since the Edo period as a signature dish for Narita pilgrims visiting “Naritasan Shinshoji Temple.” When it comes to classic unagi in Narita, “Kawatoyo Honten” is the go-to spot on the temple approach. Founded in 1910, this long-established restaurant serves eel carefully selected by craftsmen with over 50 years of experience, prepared as unaju (eel rice boxes), kabayaki, and shirayaki.
The first thing you’ll notice out front is the chefs filleting, skewering, and grilling eel right before your eyes. Their motto is “freshly cut, freshly steamed, freshly grilled,” and they focus on serving everything hot and just-made. Grilled with a secret sauce that has been continuously replenished since the restaurant first opened, the eel is plump, tender, and perfectly fragrant—simply outstanding. In addition to unagi dishes like “Premium Unaju” and “Premium Shirayaki,” the menu also includes river fish specialties such as “koi no arai” (chilled carp sashimi).
This popular spot does not take reservations, so be prepared to wait—especially on weekends and holidays. You’ll get a numbered ticket at the entrance, so it’s a good idea to pick one up first and explore the area while you wait.
