Kikuya is a long-established Japanese restaurant located along the approach to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple. Founded in the mid-Edo period, the name Kikuya comes from the chrysanthemum crest bestowed by Shinshoji. In addition to Narita’s famous eel and other freshwater fish dishes like carp, it also offers a wide range of a la carte dishes and set meals.

The restaurant’s signature eel dishes use only eel with proof of origin, ensuring every serving is safe and delicious. The kabayaki sauce is rich yet cleanly sweet, bringing out the eel’s full flavor. The “Unaju (1 whole eel)” comes with soup and pickles. For an additional fee, you can upgrade the soup to kimosui (eel liver soup).

Beyond eel, the menu also includes set meals, rice bowls like tendon (tempura bowl), a la carte dishes, and full-course options, making it an easy pick for many occasions. There’s also a great selection of drinks that pair well with Japanese cuisine. A newer location, “Kamimachi Kikuya,” opened near the main restaurant in 2022 and offers the same menu.
