Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art

An art museum housed in a brick warehouse with a 100-year history.

Last update :

The Hirosaki Brick Warehouse Museum opened in 2020, set inside a historic, century-old red brick warehouse. The building was known by the name Yoshino-cho brick warehouse since its heyday as a sake brewery during the Meiji and Taisho eras, but still stands today as a beloved treasure that shaped the landscape of Hirosaki. Step inside today to find new installations welcomed twice a year per spring/summer and autumn/winter seasons, bringing with them the latest in art from Japan and abroad. The site also showcases a number of collections and contemporary works that celebrate the history and culture of Hirosaki and the greater Tohoku region.

Prior to opening, the museum held special exhibits for Hirosaki native and world-renowned artist Yoshitomo Nara in 2002, 2005 and 2006. One notable piece by Nara is A to Z Memorial Dog, set at the museum entrance as a token of gratitude to the locals who took part in his exhibits.

The adjoining café offers dishes made with local Aomori ingredients like apple pie and cider made from the region's famous apples. You’ll also want to swing by the museum shop, which features original goods and unique products from Hirosaki that make perfect souvenirs.
