Sofukuji, a temple of the Rinzai Myoshinji sect, was founded in 1511. Lord Oda Nobunaga protected it as a Bodhi place when he moved to Gifu in 1567.

The "Oda Nobunaga and Son Mausoleum," where the memorial tablets of Lord Nobunaga and his son Nobutada are enshrined, can be viewed in the garden. After Nobunaga and Nobutada fell victim to the betrayal by Akechi Mitsuhide in the Incident at Honno-ji, Nobunaga's concubine, Onabe no kata, sent their relics to this temple. An "Oda Nobunaga Memorial Service" is held here on the first Saturday of November during the "Gifu Nobunaga Festival" each year.

The "Blood Ceiling" in the main hall is a valuable historical artifact telling the story of the Sengoku period. After Nobunaga's grandson Hidenobu sided with Ishida Mitsunari of the Western Army during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Gifu Castle was heavily attacked by the Eastern Army. The ceiling of the main hall was made from the floorboards of Gifu Castle to mourn the fallen soldiers, and bloodstains can still be seen today, indicating the intensity of the battle.
