CASA stella

CASA stella is a cultural and tourist facility that opened in 2025 in the historic Kawaramachi district, which developed as a river port from the time of Oda Nobunaga and became home to a flourishing traditional craft industry. A variety of shops are housed in the renovated former Matsui Residence, a building over 100 years old that once served as a wholesaler of raw materials for washi paper. The facility showcases the appeal of Gifu’s traditional crafts, including Gifu wagasa (Japanese paper umbrellas) and Gifu chochin (paper lanterns).

A highlight is Japan’s only specialty store dedicated to Gifu wagasa, where umbrellas in a wide variety of colors and patterns are displayed in rows. Approximately 60 umbrellas are displayed and available for purchase at any given time, and wagasa are also available for rental. The first floor is also home to a shop offering vintage kimono rental and dressing services, perfect for exploring the historic streets, as well as a specialty restaurant serving hiyashi tanuki soba (chilled soba noodles), one of Gifu’s soul foods. Be sure to also visit the second-floor galleries, one showcasing Gifu chochin and the other displaying AKARI light sculptures designed by world-renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

At Gifu’s Handcraft Artisan House CASA, a related facility located along Kawaramachi-dori Street, visitors can also take part in hands-on programs such as making mini wagasa and painting chochin and bonbori lanterns. Visiting both facilities is sure to make Gifu’s traditional crafts feel more accessible and familiar.
