Tendai Sect, Koto Sanzan, Shakasan Hyakusaiji Temple

A historic temple founded in 606 by Prince Shotoku. The spacious grounds are filled with highlights, including highly valuable historic buildings, stone walls that evoke centuries past, and beautiful gardens.

Autumn is when its appeal grows even more. Trees throughout the grounds turn vivid shades of red, yellow, and orange, creating a scene that looks like a painting. Selected for “Japan’s 100 Best Autumn Leaves” and “Kinki’s 5 Major Fall Foliage Spots,” its beauty is a must-see. At the Honbo Garden, located midway up the temple grounds and also chosen for “Japan’s 100 Notable Gardens,” you’ll find yourself captivated by the contrast of massive rocks and fall colors.

Peak fall foliage season is from October to November. In November, limited-time illuminations are also held. After dark, the lit-up leaves create an enchanting scene, offering a brilliant kind of beauty that feels different from daytime.
