Last update :

Since its establishment in 1361, it has been the head temple of the Eigenji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, which has been dedicated to the study of zazen and prayers for safety under the sun. In the past, as many as 2,000 monks were said to have gathered here to practice Buddhism, and there are 127 branch temples throughout Japan.

The main statue of Kannon, also known as the "Yotsugi Kannon (Goddess of Mercy to bless one's successor)", is believed to be blessed with children and heirs when one prays for them. Other treasures worthy of a temple with such a long history include a stone statue of the sixteen arhats enshrined in the approach to the temple, and a nationally designated important cultural property, a seated statue of monk Jakushitsu Genko.

The temple grounds, including the approach to the temple, are covered with various kinds of trees, such as mountain maples, maple trees, ginkgo trees, and yellow maples, which turn bright red in autumn, creating a picturesque scene. The area is known as one of the best places in Kansai to view the autumn foliage. Around November, the best time to view the leaves, the area is lit up and various events are held, including a visit to the second floor of the temple gate, which is normally closed to the public. Many tourists from home and abroad come to visit the temple, which is usually quiet, and the temple becomes very lively.

The shining blue maples in early summer are also a must-see. The fresh green leaves swaying in the wind are as beautiful as the autumn leaves. Once you have purified your mind by visiting the temple, you can extend your visit to the nostalgic surrounding area known as Okueigenji Temple.
