IBUSUKI NO TAMATEBAKO
A sightseeing train filled with treasures and travel delights, wrapped up in the Dragon Palace legend.
This reservation-only sightseeing train makes three daily round trips between Kagoshima-Chuo Station and Ibusuki Station. Its name and concept come from the legendary Japanese tale of Urashima Taro and the Dragon Palace, famously set on the Satsuma Peninsula. The train’s striking exterior—half-black and half-white—represents the story’s transformation: when Urashima Taro opened the magical "Tamatebako" (treasure box), instantly turning his hair from black to white. Mist sprayed when the doors open evokes the white smoke from the box.
Inside, Car No. 1 you’ll find a sleek, teakwood interior (often used in yachts and cruise ships), while Car No. 2 uses cedar sourced from southern Kyushu. The train provides a variety of seating options, including cozy sofa areas surrounded by bookshelves, group-friendly box seats, children’s chairs, and ocean-view counter seats perfect for enjoying Kagoshima’s iconic vistas of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima volcano.
The journey takes about 50 minutes, during which passengers can savor locally inspired gourmet items, such as the special "IBUSUKI NO TAMATEBAKO Bento" (advanced online reservation required), as well as regional sweets and beverages, making the trip an even more delightful experience.
