Onneto Lagoon
A scenic brackish lake protected by a forest of Ezomatsu spruce.
Along with Lake Furen, it is one of Nemuro’s representative lakes and one of the “Nemuro Top 10 Scenic Spots.” It is a type of lake called a brackish lake, where freshwater and seawater mix, and its shoreline is Approx. 15 kilometers. Past the Onneto Bridge, it connects to Nemuro Bay. It is generally shallow—so much so that tidal flats spread far offshore at low tide—and it is lively with people who enjoy clam digging for asari clams and surf clams.
The lake is part of the Notsuke-Furen Prefectural Natural Park designated by Hokkaido, and its rich natural environment, surrounded by a dense forest of Ezomatsu spruce, is protected. Many wild animals, including wild birds, live here, and you may also see the red-crowned crane (tancho), the only wild crane that breeds in Japan.
Another highlight of Onneto Lagoon is the scenery, which shows different expressions depending on the season and time of day. The Onneto Bridge spanning the lake mouth is especially popular for sunset views. There is parking at the foot of the bridge, so you can park and take your time enjoying the view of Onneto Lagoon.
