Honjohama Beach
A hidden gem with clear, shallow waters, known as the site of the oldest Urashima Tarō legend.
Located in Ine Town, Kyoto Prefecture, Honjohama Beach is a peaceful seaside spot situated right next to Urashima Shrine, which is associated with Japan’s oldest Urashima Tarō legend. The beach is said to be the very “Tokoyo no Hama” (Shore of Eternity) that appears in the tale, and its scenery truly lives up to the story-a stunning coastline stretching before your eyes.
Beloved by locals, this beach is shallow with exceptionally clear waters, making it a safe and enjoyable destination for families. From June to September, visitors can also try sea kayaking, a popular way to refresh and take in the natural beauty of Ine. The official swimming season typically runs from mid-July to mid-August, during which free showers and changing rooms are available. Parking for around 20 cars is provided (paid). Please note that camping, barbecues, and fireworks are not allowed on the beach.
Nearby attractions include Urashima Shrine, Kamaya Coast, and Nunobiki Falls, making it easy to combine a day at the beach with sightseeing in the surrounding area.
