Yugendo Cave
A mysterious cave where you can see Approx. 350-million-year-old fossils and stalactites.
This rare limestone cave features exposed strata dating back 350 million years, where you can see Paleozoic fossils and stalactites. It is known as a limestone cave discovered in 1980.
Inside, narrow passageways stretch on, creating a mysterious landscape dotted with stalactites, including icicle-shaped formations, and underground lakes glowing emerald green. Fossils preserved in the cave walls, including crinoid calyx fossils, first discovered on bedrock in Japan, as well as brachiopods, fusulina, and tetracorals, make this a place that sparks intellectual curiosity.
At the adjacent Yugendo Cave Exhibition Hall, you can see displays of fossils collected locally and easy-to-understand explanations of the rock strata. There is also a guide map to Yugendo Cave and explanations of the highlights, so it is recommended to stop by before your walk. Some areas inside the cave have poor footing and can be slippery, so be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Also, the temperature inside the cave stays around 55°F year-round, so it is a good idea to bring a jacket. A walk through the cave takes about 20–30 minutes.
