Kitayamazaki (Kitayamazaki Observatory)

Kitayamazaki is one of the most iconic scenic spots along the Sanriku Coast, where the northern and southern areas have distinct features, with marine terraces in the north and a ria coastline in the south. Cliffs rising 200m high stretch for Approx. 8km, and its dramatic landscape has earned it the nickname “the Alps of the Sea.”

From unusual rocks, strangely shaped stones, and sea-eroded caves to seasonal natural beauty such as fresh spring greenery, autumn leaves, and snowy winter scenery, there is plenty to see throughout the year. If the timing is right, you may also catch the mystical sight of sea fog covering the cliffs, created by the cold, moist northeasterly wind known as “Yamase.”

The open wooden deck of the First Observatory is barrier-free, making it easy to get around with strollers and wheelchairs. For the most powerful views, the Second Observatory is recommended, while the Third Observatory is ideal if you also want to enjoy a forest walk. By taking the Approx. 700 steps leading down from the observatory, you can descend close to the water’s edge. Looking up at the cliffs from sea level is truly spectacular. If you have time, it is also worth stopping by the “Kitayamazaki Visitor Center,” which introduces the four seasons, plants, and wildlife of Kitayamazaki.
