With a history of over 1,200 years, this hot spring is said to have begun with a legend of a crane healing its wounds here. During the Edo period, the Shonai Domain's hot spring office was established here, and the area prospered as a therapeutic bathing destination. Many literary figures, including Matsuo Basho, Akiko Yosano, and Riichi Yokomitsu, also visited, and it has been celebrated in numerous novels and poems.

The source temperature is Approx. 68°C, with an abundant flow rate of 1,300 liters per minute. The spring quality is a sodium, calcium-chloride and sulfate spring, and is expected to help with cuts, burns, eczema, neuralgia, and sensitivity to cold. In addition to ryokan inns where you can stay and relax, the hot spring can also be enjoyed at three public bathhouses. There are also three footbaths, including one attached to a cafe, as well as a drinking spring where you can experience the hot spring from within.

Cherry trees line the Atsumi River flowing through the hot spring town, and in summer you can enjoy sweetfish fishing, while in autumn you can watch salmon swimming upstream.
From August to October, the town hosts "Yukata Yu Meguri," an event where visitors can stroll around the hot spring town in yukata. Put on a yukata, head out into town, and enjoy special deals.
