Miyakojima Kaihoukan
A fun destination with a museum, dining, shopping, and hands-on activities all in one place.
A museum and hands-on activity complex set on a hill at the entrance to Bora River Beach in southeastern Miyakojima. A sweeping panorama stretches out below, with Bora Izumi Beach in the foreground and Cape Higashi-Hennazaki in the distance, making this a great spot to enjoy ocean views both inside and outside the facility.
The complex consists of four areas: a museum, souvenir floor, restaurant, and activity facility. At the museum, the director’s shell collection, gathered single-handedly from around the world over more than half a century, is on display, with over 10,000 items exhibited. There are also fun features, including a giant giant clam photo spot. At the activity facility, visitors can try shell craft making. You can make accessories, straps, photo frames, and more using shells, making it perfect for creating travel memories.
For a meal, head to the restaurant inside the facility overlooking the sea. The lineup includes eye-catching dishes such as taco rice and set meals served in real giant clam shells. The shopping center also offers a wide selection of Miyakojima souvenirs, including original shell accessories and “Shima no Takumi,” aged awamori sold exclusively at Kaihoukan.
