Zaimoku-iwa Park (Park of Water and Stone in Harmony)

A scenic park shaped by abundant water and giant volcanic rock formations.

Supervised by :  Shiroishi City

This park spreads out just below Shichikashuku Dam in the upper reaches of the Shiroishi River, which flows through southern Miyagi Prefecture. Here, you can see the impressive national natural monument “Obara no Zaimoku-iwa” up close, standing Approx. 65 m tall and Approx. 100 m wide. Zaimoku-iwa is a giant rock formation created when magma that erupted near the earth’s surface cooled and hardened over many years, forming the distinctive shape known as columnar joints. It is a work of natural art born over millions of years. The scenery created by the water-rich Shiroishi River and the mysterious rock face is truly spectacular.

Another highlight is the chance to enjoy seasonal scenery throughout the year, from spring with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, to summer fun playing in the waterway, to majestic autumn leaves set against the giant rocks. From late April, streams of carp-shaped streamers are also displayed, making this a hidden photo spot popular for capturing both the cherry blossoms and koinobori swimming across the sky in one shot.

The park is also home to attractions such as the prefecturally designated tangible cultural property “Former Kamitozawa Kendan Residence, Former Kimura Family House,” which still conveys the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town, and “Zaimoku-iwa Himuro,” a silkworm storage facility that uses a natural wind cave. At the farm restaurant “Obara Nagomi Chaya,” you can also enjoy fragrant 100% buckwheat soba while looking out at Zaimoku-iwa.
