Aquamarine Inawashiro Kingfisher Aquarium

See, catch, and eat. A museum where you can deepen your connection with watersides and life itself.

Last update :

This aquarium is themed around “Thinking about the future of people and the planet through Fukushima’s lakes and marshes.” In addition to native freshwater species found in Fukushima Prefecture, it also displays invasive species that threaten native wildlife, helping visitors better understand the current state of waterside environments. It also boasts Japan’s largest display of diving beetle species, and its popular “Interesting Box Aquarium,” which exhibits Approx. 40 species one by one in 20 cm cube tanks, is a great place to learn about biodiversity.

You can also watch feeding time for the rare Eurasian otter, which is genetically close to the Japanese otter that once lived in Japan, enjoy the wood education play corner “Mori no Kobako,” where children can touch and play with wood, and explore a variety of special exhibitions.

The “River Creatures” area focuses on wild birds and river fish that live in the prefecture. You can closely observe kingfishers, brown dippers, eastern yellow wagtails, and Nikko char living together.

After making your way around the museum, we recommend joining the fishing experience held from late April to October 31. Catch fish from the moat, then enjoy them freshly prepared as fried fish on the spot, and take a moment to reflect on the importance of receiving life.
