Shioyazaki Lighthouse

A white symbol that hugs the horizon, linking the sea and sky.

Last update :

First lit in 1899, this lighthouse stands 27 meters tall and shines with a 440,000-candela beam. Known for its sturdy reinforced concrete structure and striking white exterior, it has long been beloved as a symbol of the surrounding coast.

It has been selected as one of the “50 Best Lighthouses in Japan,” and its fame extends nationwide thanks to its appearance in the lyrics of a hit song by Showa-era superstar Hibari Misora and as a film location. Its rare appeal as a lighthouse that visitors can actually enter also draws plenty of tourists who make a special trip just to come here.

Climb the 103-step spiral staircase, and the ocean view from the top floor is almost beyond words. As you gaze out at the horizon in the refreshing sea breeze, you are sure to feel the vast scale of the Pacific Ocean all over again.

The on-site exhibition room carefully explains the lighthouse’s long history. Along with displays introducing how lighthouses work and tracing its path through the earthquake disaster, you can also see valuable materials such as bricks from the original lighthouse and a mercury bath rotation device.
