Jindai Botanical Garden, Aquatic Botanical Garden

An aquatic botanical garden where visitors can freely experience the beauty of Japan’s natural countryside-with free admission.

Last update :

Opened in 1985 as an annex of the popular Jindai Botanical Gardens, the Jindai Aquatic Botanical Garden offers visitors the chance to enjoy Japan’s natural wetlands. An additional 1.8 hectares were opened between 1995 and 1997.

Located on what was once a natural marsh fed by springs from the hillside behind Jindaiji Temple, the park has been developed with wooden boardwalks that allow visitors to stroll comfortably through the area. Part of the garden sits on the site of the Tokyo-designated Historic Ruins of Jindaiji Castle. Beneath the boardwalks, clear water flows gently, creating an idyllic scene reminiscent of Japan’s rural landscapes.

As its name suggests, the garden is home to many aquatic plants, including Japanese irises (hanashōbu), rabbit-ear irises (kakitsubata), spatterdocks (kōhone), purple loosestrife (misohagi), and water fringe (asaza). June is particularly beautiful when the irises come into full bloom, filling the garden with vibrant colors.
