The author of “Gegege no Kitaro,” Shigeru Mizuki, spent many years in Chofu City, which is regarded as his second hometown. It is here a cafe and gallery was opened under the concept of “Coexistence with Nature” just like the theme in his comic “Gegege no Kitaro.” In the 60-plus-year-old wooden home in the tree shades, the world of “Gegege no Kitaro” is recreated.

The house is divided into three sections - the “shop” packed with Kitaro goods, Yokai (monster) Gallery displays Mizuki’s paintings and monster figures and Yokai Cafe serving the original menu designed after monsters. The cafe’s popular menu includes Gegege Latte with the late art of Kitaro, Nezumi otoko (Rat man), or two others that you can choose from, or Ittan-momen no Chaya Sandae, a long piece of cotton expressed with agar jelly. In the Yokai Gallery on the 2nd floor, there is a relaxing deck surrounded by Jindaiji Temple’s trees. After immersing yourself in the “Gegege no Kitaro” world, have a soothing moment here.
