Atami Seaside Fireworks Festival
A dynamic and immersive fireworks display that lights up the night sky over Atami Bay.
The Atami Seaside Fireworks Festival is a long-running pyrotechnic event held in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, with a history dating back to 1952. It began as a gesture of gratitude toward local residents who worked tirelessly to rebuild the city following disasters such as the 1949 typhoon and the fire near Atami Station. Since then, it has grown into a signature event of Atami, now held more than ten times a year - not only in summer, but throughout the seasons.
One of its greatest attractions is the unique acoustic effect created by the area’s bowl-shaped terrain, surrounded by mountains on three sides. Fireworks launched over the bay echo powerfully, creating a stadium-like sense of immersion. The grand finale, known as the “Great Aerial Niagara,” is a spectacular display in which silver star mines flood the entire night sky with light, leaving spectators in awe with its breathtaking scale and intensity. This is a truly Atami-exclusive performance that takes full advantage of the bay’s natural geography.
The show can be enjoyed from locations such as the sandy beach of Atami Sun Beach and Shinsui Park. On event days, food stalls selling favorites like okonomiyaki and buttered potatoes line Shinsui Park, filling the area with a festive atmosphere. Gazing up at the illuminated sky while feeling the sea breeze has become a cherished moment for visitors to this popular tourist destination.
