MOA MUSEUM OF ART

An art museum exhibiting painters, crafts, and sculptures founded by Mokichi Okada.

Art museum

MOA MUSEUM OF ART is an art museum founded in 1982 by Mokichi Okada, well known as an art collector, exhibits a lot of important cultural property and important art objects. Among them, ”The red and White Plum Blossoms”, called “Kohakubai zu byoubu” in Japanese, created by Ogata Korin, one of the leading painters in the Edo period. It is a national treasure of a striking presence. Do not miss looking at the beauty of harmonious colors painted with gold in the background, and red and white colors of plum blossoms.

The building of MOA MUSEUM OF ART has an artistic element itself as much as the exhibitions, for example, 7 elevators connect between the entrance and the main hall and provide a viewing of gradations on the ceiling and wall with lighting design. A mapping made with a kaleidoscope is performed in the Circular Hall, using a live camera for the kaleidoscope, the same design of mapping is impossible to make.

The museum is a great viewing spot located at a higher altitude in Atami, so you will see beautiful scenery of nature and the Sagami-nada sea at an open place up ahead of the elevator, "Moore Square”. In this open place, a scripture, ”King and Queen”, by Henry Moore is installed, you will enjoy a collaborated beauty between an art work and the nature.

Children’s Art Exhibition takes place every year and prize-winning works are usually exhibited because MOA MUSEUM OF ART gives priority to art education. Appreciation of children’s art is also another way of spending good time in the museum.
