Koga History Museum

A legacy of Koga’s knowledge and art, revived on castle ruins where history still lives on.

Last update :

Located on the former site of Koga Castle, once a flourishing stronghold, this museum broadly introduces the history and culture of Koga from prehistoric times to the modern era. The interior of this designer building, which has received numerous awards including the Architectural Institute of Japan Award and the Public Buildings Award, is mainly organized around three themes.

The first exhibition room mainly features materials related to Dutch studies, including approximately 3,000 items from the Takami Senseki Collection, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The second is lined with exhibits that clearly explain the changes in Koga’s history. The third exhibition room is also well worth seeing, displaying calligraphy and paintings by literary figures associated with Koga, including Sanga Oyama, Kyosai Kawanabe, and Seiko Okuhara. In addition to these permanent exhibitions, several special and themed exhibitions are also held throughout the year.

Also, on the nights of August 14 and 15 every year, the annual event Yume Andon to Yusuzumi is held, lighting up the castle ruins moat with lanterns.
