Mori Ogai Memorial Museum
A literature museum standing at the birthplace of Mori Ogai, one of the great literary figures of the Meiji era.
This literature museum stands in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, where Mori Ogai, one of the leading authors of modern Japanese literature and a great literary figure of the Meiji era, was born and raised. To the north is the Former Residence of Mori Ogai, a nationally designated historic site. It is incorporated as part of the exhibits, and you can also look out over the former residence across the courtyard from the museum’s open lobby.
Inside, the museum displays items connected to Mori Ogai, who wrote many works including The Dancing Girl and Takasebune, as well as valuable materials such as handwritten manuscripts. Through videos, photo panels, and other exhibits, it introduces not only his life as a writer but also his years as an army surgeon, covering the period from when he moved to Tokyo at age 10 until his death at 60, while also looking back on his time in Tsuwano, where he spent his formative years.
Around the anniversary of his death on July 9 and his birthday on January 19, a variety of commemorative events are held. These offer a deeper appreciation and understanding of Ogai’s literature.
The surrounding area is filled with scenery typical of Tsuwano, including white-walled streets and carp swimming through the canals, making it a great place to enjoy a walk through the old castle town.
