Kototaki Falls

A waterfall flowing down a giant single slab of rock over 40 meters high like the strings of a koto.

Last update :

Deep in the forests of Kyotamba, this waterfall was selected as one of the 200 Best Natural Sites in Kyoto. It is said to have been named Kototaki because its delicate streams of water resemble the 13 strings of a koto. Its beauty, along with surroundings free of distracting man-made objects, has made it a popular filming location for movies and TV dramas, including period dramas and many other productions.

The waterfall drops 43 meters down the surface of a giant single slab of rock, making it one of the largest in Kyoto Prefecture. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, from cherry blossoms in spring and fresh greenery in early summer to autumn leaves in fall. A walking path leads from the parking lot to Kototaki Falls, and Kotaki Park on the upper stream side offers a suspension bridge where you can enjoy the rich natural surroundings. A neighboring campground is also open from spring to fall.

Gyokuunji Temple, located near the waterfall, is a Soto Zen temple also known for having its current grounds restored by Akechi Mitsuhide. Seasonal flowers and trees, including satsuki azaleas and azaleas in spring, make it a popular photo spot. The autumn foliage is especially stunning, so visiting both the falls and the temple together is highly recommended in fall.
