Last update :

Kyogamisaki Cape sits on the Tango Peninsula at the northernmost point of Kyoto Prefecture and the entire Kinki region. Its cliffs are marked by well-developed columnar joints formed by andesite, and the cape is also one of the sites within the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark.

Kyogamisaki Lighthouse stands 148 m above sea level and was first lit in 1898. It is one of only five first-order lighthouses in Japan that use a first-order Fresnel lens, and it has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The inside of the lighthouse is usually closed to the public, but it is opened on holidays around Lighthouse Memorial Day on November 1, from late October to early November. Visitors can see the rare first-order lens up close.

The Tango Peninsula is also famous as a spot for both sunrise and sunset views. East of Kyogamisaki Cape, you can see the sun rise over the Sea of Japan, while on the west side, the setting sun is beautiful. The lighthouse silhouette against the backlight is also highly photogenic. If you want to enjoy the cape’s scenery even more, be sure to stop by the two observation decks, one on the summit and one at the tip of the cape.
