Uomidou
A scenic viewpoint along National Route 9 with sweeping views of the Sea of Japan.
Nagao-bana is famous as a scenic spot where dramatic rock formations and sea caves shaped by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan gather. Located on its eastern side, Uomidou is said to have gotten its name from the days when people watched the movement of sardine schools from this hilltop and signaled fishing boats.
Thanks to its excellent views, this spot is a popular lookout and one of the most visited places along National Route 9, a well-known driving route for enjoying the scenery of the Sea of Japan. In addition to nearby coasts such as Kozumi Coast and Hakuto Coast, on clear days you can also see the Tottori Sand Dunes and the mountains of the Chugoku range. The sunset, as it sinks into the Sea of Japan and turns everything orange, is especially beautiful, and so is the night view lit by the fishing lights of squid boats.
At the observatory, you can find a stone monument to the local folk song “Kaigara-bushi,” which celebrates scallop fishing and also has a festival inspired by the song every August, as well as “Nozoki-iwa,” a large rock with two holes through which you can view the coastal scenery.
