Mount Takabocchi rises 1,665 m above sea level in eastern Shiojiri City. With several theories surrounding the origin of its unusual name, the mountain is known for the spectacular 360-degree panoramic views from the unobstructed highlands at its summit.

The sweeping views encompass Lake Suwa below, the Northern and Southern Alps, and Mount Fuji. From spring through summer, colorful alpine plants delight visitors. The early-summer azaleas are especially popular, blooming as grazing cattle wander leisurely across the highlands. From mid-October through December, a sea of clouds may form in the early morning when weather conditions are right, creating an ethereal landscape.

The night view of the lights around Lake Suwa is also well worth seeing. Visitor numbers have increased in recent years after the area appeared in popular anime and television dramas. A camping area opened in 2021, offering the chance to camp amid the highlands’ refreshing air.

With no public transportation available, the highlands can only be reached by car. Note that the municipal road leading there is closed in winter, from early December through late April.
