A small zoo in Yukyuzan Park, Nagaoka City, where visitors can observe and learn about animals seen in everyday life.

Last update :

Opened in 1951 as a live-animal exhibition facility of the Nagaoka Municipal Science Museum, this historic small zoo is located in Yukyuzan Park in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture. It is home to Approx. 30 species of animals, mainly Japanese macaques.

Known as a place to learn while observing familiar mammals and birds, the zoo features a spacious monkey mountain, an aviary for crested ibis relatives, a waterfowl house, a flying cage, a peacock house, a rabbit house, and more, allowing visitors to see the ecology of a wide variety of animals up close. Each exhibit is designed to make it easy to observe the animals’ characteristics and behavior, creating an environment where both children and adults can enjoy learning.

Because the exhibits focus on creatures that children see in picture books and everyday life, the zoo is also used as a place for learning that deepens interest in and understanding of animals. Since visitors can learn by observing living creatures directly, it is also appreciated as a place for nature education for local children.

Admission is free, making it easy for families and travelers to stop by. Located in a corner of Yukyuzan Park, where visitors can enjoy nature in every season, the zoo is also a popular stop combined with a stroll through the park when cherry blossoms are in full bloom in spring.
