Sanganesan Skyline

This scenic 3.2-mile drive runs from Higashihazu-cho in Nishio City to Katahara Onsen in Gamagori City. The route crosses 1,070-foot Mount Sangane and is dotted with historic sites such as Sangane Kannon, Hishima Kannon, and the Grave of the Seven Martyrs, creating an atmospheric journey where scenery and history come together.

Its greatest highlight is the panoramic view of Mikawa Bay from the summit area. Gamagori’s cityscape and Takeshima Island spread out below, with the Atsumi Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean beyond. On clear days, the view extends as far as Cape Irago, Toba, and even central Nagoya. The sweeping scenery formed by the sea and cityscape stretching east and west is spectacular. At sunset, the sea turns crimson, and after dark, countless lights trace the shoreline, making this one of the Mikawa region’s best-known night-view spots.

The road is also affectionately known as the “Hydrangea Line.” In June, around 70,000 colorful hydrangea plants bloom along the roadside. Near the end of the route, approximately 50,000 hydrangeas flower at Ajisai no Sato in Katahara Onsen, while around 10,000 bloom at Honkoji Temple. The blue and purple flowers covering the mountainside are a signature sight of early summer. In mid-March, around 70,000 daffodil bulbs reach peak bloom, adding vivid color to the drive and heralding the arrival of spring.
