Omura Nagoshi Festival

A traditional event bringing together 25 shrines in Omura.

Last update :

This summer festival in Omura, Nagasaki Prefecture, centers on Shinto rituals. Originating as the Banban Festival in 1973, it has grown into a major celebration where 25 local shrines gather to give thanks for nature's blessings. Its distinctive format, known as the Nagoshi Grand Festival, brings together every shrine in the city—an approach rarely seen elsewhere in Japan. The traditional event has been passed down as a way to purify the body and mind and pray for good health.

The main festival is held each year on August 2 and 3 around JR Omura Station. Its wide range of events includes the Nagoshi Group Dance, ceremonial drumming, local performing arts, children's sumo, and the Muscle Grand Prix. One highlight is the Nagoshi Group Dance, performed by approximately 1,500 people at once. Numerous food stalls also serve a variety of festival fare.

On August 1, before the main festival, the Omura Nagoshi Fireworks Festival is held as an evening celebration. Approximately 3,000 fireworks light up the sky against a backdrop of Usu Island in Omura Bay, Nagasaki Airport, and the Minoshima Bridge. A powerful 24-inch shell brings the display to a close.
