When I came to Kume Island, known as the “Island of Beauty,” I chose to stay at the Watermark Hotel and found it very comfortable and relaxing. The hotel is conveniently located, with restaurants, convenience stores, and a beautiful beach nearby, so everything you need is within easy reach. Especially after swimming at the beach, you can use the shower facilities right away instead of going back to your room covered in seawater, which is a huge plus for travelers!

The scenery around the hotel is also beautiful and full of a tropical resort atmosphere. After the rooms were renovated, everything looked clean and comfortable. During the few days I stayed here, my pace naturally slowed down, and I felt completely relaxed. The beauty of Kume Island is that you don’t need a packed itinerary—just looking at the ocean and feeling the breeze is enough to put you in a good mood.

Kagoshima Jingu Shrine

A historic Shinto shrine said to have been founded in the Age of the Gods, and also associated with the reign of Emperor Jimmu, regarded as Japan’s first emperor. It enshrines Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto and Toyotamahime-no-Mikoto, central figures in the Umisachi, Yamasachi myth, as its main deities. When visiting Kagoshima, don’t miss this historic shrine. Kagoshima Jingu Shrine is designated a National Historic Site and is also one of the largest shrines in southern Kyushu.

The vermilion shrine buildings are surrounded by lush greenery and look especially solemn and striking in the sunlight. Once inside the grounds, you can feel the peaceful and sacred atmosphere. It’s really relaxing to stroll around slowly and admire the architecture and natural scenery.

The blue summer sky and verdant trees make the entire shrine look even more magnificent. It’s a place well worth visiting to experience Japanese history and traditional culture.
Shuri Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path

The “Shuri Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path” was paved in the 16th Century during the Ryukyu Kingdom age, as part of the Pearl Road, which connects Shuri Castle with various districts. The Shuri Kinjo Stone Slope is located 500m away from Shuri Castle in a quaint neighborhood.

When visiting Shuri in Okinawa, don’t miss the historic Shuri Kinjo-cho Stone Paved Path. Built in the 16th century, it was once an important road leading to Shuri Castle. Walking slowly along the old Ryukyu limestone-paved path, with traditional red-tiled roofs and stone walls on both sides, you can also take in views of the hillside and streets, as if you’re stepping back into the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Although the stone path is a bit steep and takes some energy to walk, the scenery along the way is truly full of character. The sunlight falling on the old houses and stone walls creates a distinctly Okinawan sense of history and a laid-back atmosphere.
Kume Island

Located about 100 kilometers west of Okinawa’s main island in the East China Sea, Kume Island is actually a smattering of several inhabited and uninhabited islets. The entire island is designated as a Prefectural Natural Park that was once praised as the “most beautiful island” in the region during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Access is convenient: about 30 minutes by plane from Naha Airport or approximately 2 hours 50 minutes by ferry.

Kume Island is one of those unforgettable places among Okinawa’s remote islands. It takes about 3 hours by ferry from Naha. Although the ride isn’t short, the moment the deep blue ocean and pure white beaches come into view, it all feels worth it. The water here is as colorful as a painter’s palette, ranging from pale, transparent blue to deep azure. Paired with the fine white sand, it’s so beautiful that it almost doesn’t seem real.

The island’s natural scenery is very well preserved, without the bustle of overdevelopment. Walking along the beach, there’s nothing but the sea breeze, sunshine, and endless ocean views. Although it takes a 3-hour ferry ride to get here, it’s absolutely worth it! If you love the ocean, beaches, and untouched natural scenery, Kume Island is truly worth adding to your itinerary.

Once you’re here, you can’t help taking photo after photo because every view is picturesque.
