Netsunoyu is a tourist spot where you can enjoy watching “yumomi!”

“Yumomi” is the act of churning the hot water of an onsen with long planks, so that the water temperature is reduced to a temperature suitable for bathing.

Kusatsu Onsen’s source springs have water temperatures ranging from 51degrees Celsius all the way to 91 degrees Celsius, too hot for people to bathe in. However, adding cooler water to drop the temperature would alter the effectiveness of the hot spring, and so yumomi began to be used.

Yumomi and Dance Show

In the facility’s “Yumomi and Dance Show,” women wearing headbands churn the waters while singing, “Kusatsu is a good place. Come and visit!” This sight has become one of Kusatsu’s iconic scenes!

The “Yumomi-kun Show,” where men churn instead of women, is also extremely popular. You can see the hot water splashing high from the forceful movements! Many people visit just to see the men’s Yumomi-kun Show.

On Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays, Netsunoyu hosts “Yumomi Experiences,” where guests can participate in yumomi as well! Try your hand at it on these special dates! (Yumomi Experience fee is 250 yen for elementary school aged children and up)
