Hokkaido has a wealth of wonderful products that make great souvenirs, and their sweets especially have proven to be extremely popular over the years. Kitakaro is a beloved sweets brand from Hokkaido that just opened its newest shop, Kitakaro Sapporo Honkan, in March 2016.

It's located in the heart of Sapporo near the Chuo Police Station, TV stations, and other well-known establishments.

Built in 1926 as Hokkaido’s first prefectural library, the building's history is one of its charms. It was given a slightly modern flare when reconstructed by world-renowned architect Andou Tadao.

The building's stone exterior has a dignified presence that leaves a lasting impression.

On the first floor you’ll find the shop. The second floor, however, is a little different: it doubles as a café and a multi-purpose atrium where they plan to hold sweets-related events, small concerts, etc. in the near future.

The high, white ceiling gives the space a feeling of airiness, while the east and west walls preserve a part of the building's history by displaying bookshelves crammed full of books about Hokkaido's history and desserts.

On the menu you’ll see a variety of sweets that are available for purchase at the store as well as a number of original sweets you won’t find anywhere else.

The French Cake (650 yen), which is as soft and moist as bread pudding, is one of Kitakaro’s best sellers. Bear in mind that there are only a limited number available per day. The cake comes with four different sauces, including fresh cream, to use as you please, a mini soft serve ice cream, and a drink!

For those looking for a hardier meal, Kitakaro’s Special Omelet Rice (750 yen) might be more up your ally! Inside you’ll find a scrumptious combination of rice, Hokkaido beef, and fresh eggs. What’s more, they’ll happily adjust the cooking time of your omelet to meet your preference!

※Dining hours are from 11:00-15:00

Once you start to grow tired of shopping, I suggest you take a quick break and enjoy a cone of their original soft serve ice cream (308 yen). Smooth and full of flavour, this ice cream is made with milk from Hokkaido's famous dairy farm region, Tokachi. One bite will put you in a state of bliss.
