A Taste of a Classic Kyoto Restaurant in Tokyo Midtown’s Hibiya, “Nanzenji Hyotei Hibiya Store”

Last update :

Hyotei is a long-standing historic restaurant on the grounds of Kyoto’s Nanzen-ji Temple. Established roughly 450 years ago, it started out as a teahouse.
It is well-known for its soft-boiled eggs, known as “Hyotei Tamago,” and its breakfast porridge.
Hyotei opened a new location in Tokyo Midtown’s Hibiya in March of 2018, so I made a reservation and stopped by for lunch.

Even the restaurant’s exterior has a classic styling.
There are counter seats, table seats, and private rooms available inside.

They offer two course options for lunch: a 7,000 yen course with 6 types of dim sum and a 12,000 yen course with 8 kaiseki dishes.
I went with the 8-piece kaiseki option.

Dishes served vary by season, so take these as an example of what may be served.

My appetizer was tai (sea bream) sashimi and udo, a plant related to ginseng.
The colors contrasted beautifully.

Greenling Shinjo

Shinjo is a type of fishcake made by blending minced fish, Japanese yam, egg whites, and dashi.
The soup had a noticeable dashi flavor and was rather delicious.

This is what I was looking forward to the most out of this meal!
The eggs at the top of the photo are Hyotei’s specialty from long ago, “Hyotei Tamago.”
It was absolutely delicious, the perfect combination of dashi-shoyu seasoning with a soft-boiled egg. This is what I came here for!!

Next up was delicate grilled salmon.

Next was simmered tai head.
The tai was clearly handled with great care, and it was amazing!

As expected of a historic restaurant, I had an amazing experience. There was a pleasantly calm atmosphere, and the customer service was impeccable.
Each bit of the authentic Japanese cuisine was clearly carefully crafted, and I enjoyed it very much.
This is a great restaurant for when you’re entertaining important guests or for celebrating an anniversary!
