Trying Out the Unagi at “Tsukiji Miyagawa Honten” in Tokyo, a Long-Standing Restaurant

Last update :

In business for over 120 years, “Tsukiji Miyagawa Honten” is famous for its historic unagi (eel). This is the main location for the “Miyagawa” restaurants scattered across Japan. This is where I decided to enjoy a somewhat luxurious unagi lunch. The restaurant is located about 3 minutes on foot from Tsukiji Station and Shintomicho Station, both located in Tokyo.

It looked like the 1st floor was dedicated to cooking, so I was led up to the 2nd floor and seated in a tatami room. All of the table seats were already taken by people with reservations. Soon enough, the entire restaurant was filled to the brim.

Their weekday lunch deal costs 2,808 yen (limited quantity available)

This time, I ordered their most expensive donburi (rice bowl) dish, the “Nakairi-don” (7,776 yen).
Typically unagi is served on top of rice, but in this “nakairi” donburi there’s even unagi mixed up in the rice in addition to the unagi on top!
After waiting for about 30 minutes, my unagi was served!

It also came with soup and pickles.

The dish even looks beautiful. There was very little charring, so it looked very refined. The unagi had a pleasant amount of fat in it and was very tender, pairing beautifully with the restaurant’s mild proprietary sauce. The sauce was less sweet than typical for unagi sauce. With the addition of a bit of Japanese pepper, the dish gains a pleasant kick, making it even easier to down.

There was even more unagi in the rice! What a luxurious dish, doubling up on the eel.

If you’re a fan of unagi, this is definitely somewhere you’ll want to stop by!
