Rent a Car and Drive across Ehime! A 2-day Model Course

This trip focuses on Ehime with nature in the mild climate and the industrial heritage that built the history of Japan. The journey in a rental car covers tourist spots east and west. It will be two days filled with not only good food, but also with learning and activities.

1st Day

9:30 am From Takamatsu Airport to “Kirinomori”

Let’s begin at Shikoku’s aerial gate, Takamatsu Airport. This journey is a drive course with a rental car. First, go to the arrival lobby on the 1st floor and register for a rental car, and use the free shuttle service to the rental company of your choice. There is a plan to leave the car at the final destination, Dogo Onsen, if you wish. No need to return the car to the airport!

Get in the car and let’s go! First, get on the Takamatsu Expressway and go through mountains for about an hour and half. Get off at Kochi Expressway’s Shingu Interchange. Kirinomori is nearby.

12:00 pm Take a Break with Tasty Shingu Tea at Kirinomori

Shingu area is a prominent tea producer in Shikoku. The roadside station, Kirinomori, is a multi-purpose facility to share the attractions of this area. Their rich tea can be tasted at “Chafe Yururi,” a cafe in the facility. Try excellent sweets to go with the tea, which are created in the adjoining confectionery. A Japanese tea instructor resides at “Kaido Chaten.” Stop by to compare different Shingu teas and learn how to steep them to expand your understanding of Shingu tea.

Multi-Purpose Facility to fill your leisure, eating and lodging needs

These premises has “Kirinomori Cottage” with 7 wings if you would like to stay overnight. After splashing around in the river, you can cook your meal in the cottage’s kitchen or eat in the adjoining restaurant. It also has an outdoor hot spring for a quick visit. 2:00 pm Discover the Industrial Heritage at “Minetopia Besshi”

Next, drive about 40 minutes from Kirinomori and get to the Minetopia Besshi in Niihama City. This is a theme park built on Besshi Copper Mine’s former headquarters, which used to be one of the three most productive copper mines in Japan and among the prominent mines in the world. Visit this rare place and feel the 283-year history through an experience.

333m-long “Tour Mine Tunnel” to Share the History of the Mine

Minetopia Besshi possesses nearly 60,000m² of ground. First, get on the mine’s tour train and head for the Tour Mine Tunnel. The route, 333m in all, is divided into the Edo and Modern Periods. Each period of the mining history is depicted with dolls and big dioramas. There is a zone where you can experience carrying the extracted ore or scooping up the seeping water to let you feel the hard labor of these miners with your bones and muscles.

Taste the New Local Specialty “Zangirazu” and Witness the Grand Industrial Heritage

Minetopia Besshi has a restaurant and cafe in the main building in case you get hungry. Make sure to try Niihama’s new local specialty “Zangirazu” - “Zanki (fried chicken)” stuffed into “Onigirazu (unsquished rice ball).” Around the “Shibafu Hiroba” (lawn square), many are getting hooked to panning for gold, looking for bits of the precious metal in the sand! The highlight here is the Tonaru Zone. A tour bus bound for Tonaru Zone leaves from Minetopia Besshi’s main building (Hadeba Zone) and it is easy to get there that way. The group of industrial heritage appearing in the majestic nature is called the “Machu Picchu in the Orient.” It is a sight to see!

4:00 pm Stay in Saijo City

In a 40-minute drive from Minetopia Besshi, you will reach Saijo City. On the west side, there is “Kyukamura Setouchi-Toyo” with a gorgeous view. Iyo-saijo area has “Hotel Route-Inn Saijo” or “Extoll Inn Saijo Ekimae” near the train station. Of the many hotels, let’s stay at “Saijo Urban Hotel” this time. 2nd Day

9:00 am Hop on a Ropeway and go halfway and up to “Mt. Ishizuchi”

After checking out, drive for less than 30 minutes and get to Mt. Ishizuchi, which is actually Mt. Tengu, the highest peak in western Japan, Misen where Ishizuchi Shrine stands on top, and mountains of the South Peak. This time, we will go up to Misen. First, head for Shimodani Station at the foot of the mountain, the starting point of Ishizuchi Tozan Ropeway. It is already 455m above sea level here. Let’s ride the ropeway and go to Sanchojoju Station at 1,300m above sea level.

While you are walking for 5 minutes from the parking lot to Shimodani Station, stop by Gokuraku Temple, Tengu Hall. That is where a mask of the Grand Tengu, the guardian of mountains, is hung. you can make a wish for a safe trip here. The ropeway takes about 8 minutes. While it is climbing over the steep mountain side, it may feel surprisingly slow, but take time to marvel at the grand nature. When you arrive at the Sanchojoju Station, you will be suddenly stepping out to the world of 1,300m above sea level.

In about 3 hours in the Virgin Forest, You Are at the Top

After arriving at the Sanchojoju Station halfway up Mt. Ishizuchi, it takes roughly 30 minutes to get to Ishizuchi Shrine, Joju Hall. There, you can view Mt. Tengu, the highest peak of Mt Ishizuchi. From here, real climbing begins. Feel the virgin nature for about 3 hours, and you are on Misen, at the top! On the way, there are three spots with a chain handrail, but there is a detour and you should be able to go through safely. This time, it was a real climbing route, but there is also a course more suitable for beginners from Kumankogen Town north of Saijo City, starting from a cabin at 1,492m above sea level.

3:00 pm To “Dogo Onsen” to soothe the fatigue from climbing

There is nothing like a hot spring that soothes the fatigue of conquering Mt. Ishizuchi. Enjoy the last drive on this trip for 2 hours to “Dogo Onsen Honkan (main building).” Enter the magnificent building that depicts its history and relax your mind and body in the smooth hot spring water.
