Located almost in the center of Nagano Prefecture, Lake Suwa is the largest lake in the prefecture, with a circumference of about 16 km and surrounded by mountains. Along its nature-rich shores, fully developed cycling and jogging paths allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The area is also home to numerous attractions, including visiting all four shrines of Suwa Taisha, appreciating art at museums, and soaking in hot springs with views of the lake.

Popular activities on Lake Suwa include sightseeing cruises, kayaking, pedal boats, and amphibious bus tours, all offering breathtaking views from the water. From points around the lake, you can see Kirigamine, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and—on clear days—Mount Fuji.

In summer, the lake is known for its fireworks. The Suwa Lake Summer Night Fireworks are launched every night from late July to late August, culminating in the Suwa Lake Festival Fireworks Display on August 15, one of the top fireworks events in Japan. In winter, the lake’s surface freezes over; when conditions align—such as several days of around -10°C temperatures—it completely freezes, and a mystical natural phenomenon called Omiwatari occurs, where the ice heaves up into ridge-like formations across the lake.
