This is one of Karuizawa’s most popular tourist attractions, located along the “Shiraito Highland Way” driving route. It is a beautiful waterfall named after Mt. Asama’s snowmelt water, which gushes out from the rock and flows like thin threads. The water curtains flowing down are transparent, and the area is filled with fresh air.
The waterfall, about 3 meters tall and 70 meters wide with a gentle curve, is so stunning that it looks like a painting. The superb contrast between the green trees and the white waterfalls is spectacular.
The fresh green season is beautiful as well as the scenery in each season such as the autumn leaves and the winter snow is fascinating. The waterfall is illuminated in summer and winter. During the summer (late July to late August), projection mapping is performed on select days of the week, and the entire waterfall is decorated with a beautiful display of images. The waterfall was designated as a “Category 3 Light-Up Night View Heritage Site” in the “A Night View Heritage in Japan” in 2015, and has drawn a lot of attention since then.
From mid-December to March, you can see artificial icicles made from natural water gushing from Shiraito Falls, creating a sense of mystery.
