The city of Yanagawa sits in the southern area of Fukuoka Prefecture. The land was ruled by the Tachibana family since Muneshige Tachibana moved into the castle in 1587, as appointed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In the mid-Edo period, Ohana was added as a private residence by the 5th generation feudal lord, Sadayoshi Tachibana.

In the Meiji Period the Tachibana’s had become an esteemed noble family, at which point 14th feudal lord Tomoharu Tachibana built the Shotoen, Seiyokan, Grand Hall, living room, office, gatehouse and other buildings that you can still find on the grounds today.

The entire 23,000+ m2 grounds have been designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty. On the grounds you’ll find the Seiyokan, a suave sitting room used to entertain guests, the Tachibana Historical Documents building filled with papers denoting the Tachibana Family History, and other sites. Inside you’ll even find Shotoen, a garden with a pond and gorgeous black pines whose beauty earned the national designation. There’s also the Grand Hall, a breathtaking space that’s as much as 165 square meters wide.

In addition to polished, chic rooms available for you to stay in, there’s also a restaurant inside with seasonal Kaiseki feasts featuring dishes that use regional ingredients, seafood delights from the Ariake Sea, steamed Eel and more. This place comes highly recommended as a rare chance to stay in a Yanagawa landmark, while soaking up all of its history-rich culture.
