The 2nd lord of Kaga Domain, Maeda Toshinaga, encouraged casting in 1611 to boost the new-born castle town’s economy. Since then, the town has prospered as the Takaoka Casting’s birthplace. Kanayamachi is the oldest town in Takaoka. Along the 500m cobblestone road, homes with Senbon-Koshi latticework stand along, making up a quaint townscape.

The scene, reflecting the Meiji and Taisho Periods, was used for movie and TV locations many times and registered as a national Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. It is still known as a casting town today, dotted with workshops for hands-on casting and accessory making experience. Historic buildings are used for galleries and shops and it is pleasant to walk around.

June 20 is the day Maeda Toshinaga passed away. In his remembrance and thanks to his governance, Goinsai Festival is held. On the eve of the Festival, many participate in the march for the casting work song, Yagaefu.
