Futagoji Temple

Futagoji-Temple is a Tendai sect temple located halfway up Futago Mountain, which rises in the center of the Kunisaki Peninsula. It was founded in 718 by Ninmon Bodhisattva at Rokugomanzan of Sojiin. There was the center of mountain asceticism.　In the Edo period (1603-1867), it was also a prayer hall for the Matsudaira family of the Kitsuki Domain.

At the entrance of the approach to Futagoji-Temple stood the Niou statue, the largest statue in the Kunisaki (2.3 meters) and considered a masterpiece, and visitors rub the feet of the statue to pray for the good health of their legs and feet. After climbing the moss-covered stone steps, visitors will find the temple gate, Shoin, a Goma-Do where a Goma burning is held on the 28th of every month, a large lecture hall, and other facilities. At the top of the 70-plus stone steps is an inner sanctuary enshrining Juichimenkannon (Bodhisattva of Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon) and Ryosho Daigongen. They are blessed with the ability to give birth to children.

The Futagoji-Temple precincts have been selected as one of the "100 best forest bathing forests" and are well known for their autumn foliage. The water that gushes out of the Hashirimizu-Kannondo is sacred and is also talked about as a power spot.
