Beppu Kannawa Hell Hot Spring Museum

An educational museum where visitors can have fun learning the secrets of hot springs, which form deep underground and enrich people's lives.

Through four scenes, visitors can experience how rainwater gradually seeps underground over many years and transforms into hot spring water. The exhibits form a single narrative, explaining how hot springs are created by natural forces, why the surrounding area was once called “hell,” how local life and culture developed alongside the hot springs, and how people will continue to interact with them in the future.

There is also plenty of engaging content, including an activity where visitors collect stamps in different colors and shapes to complete a “Beppu Kannawa Steamscape,” as well as an area showing original videos.

After exploring the exhibits, stop by the adjoining 50CAFÉ to relax while watching the rising steam. Enjoy coffee, soft-serve ice cream, or a matcha latte, and browse the souvenir section for products that highlight local makers.
