Floating Torii Gates of Ouo Shrine

Beautiful vermilion Torii gates standing in the sea make a mysterious scene which reflects the lunar gravitation.

Last update :

Tara Town faces the Ariake Sea which shows a drastic tidal variation. Ouo Shrin's submerged Torii gates are attracting attention at SNS lately with the fantastic three gates lined in the sea at the highest tide.

There is an old tale about these gates. Nearly 300 years ago, residents who had been suffering under a wicked governor got him drunk and left him on Okinoshima Island in Ariake Sea. When the Island was about to sink at the highest tide, the governor was rescued by a giant fish which gave him a ride back to the shore. The governor repented and built the Ouo Shrine and the torii gates. The shrine was used to pray for safe voyage and good catch. The lives of the residents improved.

When the tide is low, you can walk on the ocean road that reaches far into Ariake Sea. This road is essential for Tara Town’s fisheries, especially in winter when seaweed is cultivated. When visiting the shrine, it is best not to disturb the work.

In August, Sen no Toro Festival is held where 500 lanterns and submerged torii gates are fascinating to see.
