Marine World Uminonakamichi, opened in 1989, is an aquarium that exhibits about 350 species and 30,000 organisms under the theme of "Kyushu's Sea”. After a major renovation in 2017, 90% of the tanks were replaced, including the 7-meter-deep open-ocean tank. The new tanks reproduce the sea of Kyushu more realistically and allow visitors to observe the ecology of living creatures in a form closer to nature.
Another attraction is the popular "Dolphin and Sea Lion Show" at the top of the list, followed by the "Open Ocean Tank Show", "Sea Otter Meal Time," and many other show programs. Limited-time events that allow visitors to get up close and personal with the animals, such as penguin walks and animal birthday celebrations, are also not to be missed.
For a break, try the restaurant on the first floor. The walls of the restaurant face the show pool, where you can enjoy a fish burger made with Miyazaki Prefecture's hammerhead shark or udon noodles topped with penguin-shaped round tempura while watching, in comfort, the dolphins swimming by.
