Susami Municipal Shrimp and Crab Aquarium

Located in Susami on the southern Kii Peninsula, this is one of Japan’s few aquariums specializing in crustaceans. Housed in the former gymnasium of the closed Esumi Junior High School and attached to Roadside Station Susami, the aquarium displays around 1,000 specimens from about 200 species, focusing on shrimp and crabs found in the waters around the Kii Peninsula.

At the entrance, visitors are greeted by a large tank inspired by the waters off Susami, known for its underwater mailbox. The unusual sight of various species of moray eels crowded together immediately catches the eye. The aquarium displays crustaceans from Japan and around the world, including Japanese spiny lobsters and other lobsters. At the touch pool, visitors can interact with giant Japanese spider crabs, among the world’s largest crabs, as well as horseshoe crabs, often called living fossils.

Other marine life is also on display, including sea turtles, sharks, penguins, and jellyfish. The sea turtle feeding experience is another popular attraction. The aquarium also attracted attention as the first in the world to display the panda amphipod, named for its black-and-white markings reminiscent of a panda. Special seasonal exhibits are held for occasions such as Children’s Day, Christmas, and New Year, offering something new to discover with each visit.
