Last update :

Stretching for about 29km, with the highest altitude of 1,622m and an average altitude of 1,350m, it is Japan's first mountain road that runs through the Azuma mountain range. The desolate area, where volcanic gases spew and vegetation is scarce, offers an exotic landscape that's a buzz on social media. From the time it opens in early April to around Golden Week, drivers can experience the "snow corridor" where walls of snow form on both sides of the road. Enjoy a drive while soaking in the ever-changing vistas, from the stunning autumn foliage to other seasonal beauties.

Along the route, you'll find scenic spots named "Azuma Eight Sceneries" by the writer Inoue Yasushi. Notable sights include the Tsubakuro Valley, known for its autumn colors and a bridge that stretches 84m above the valley floor, and the Jododaira, a wetland area where alpine plants thrive, nestled between Azuma-Kofuji and Issaikyo Mountain. Each view is spectacular in its own right.

The Skyline is free to travel. When stopping by Azuma-Kofuji or using facilities like the Jododaira Visitor Center and rest houses, park at the Jododaira parking area (fee required). Although the road is generally open all day during its operational season, it may be closed due to reasons like icy conditions. Also, note the signs indicating high gas concentrations in areas around the Iozan Bridge and drive cautiously.
