Honcho Street (Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi)

A spectacular view of Mt. Fuji peeking out beyond retro shopping street signs and utility wires.

Last update :

This street runs north to south through the central area at the northern base of Mt. Fuji, and is also known as “Fujimichi” because it stretches toward the mountain. The view here is stunning, with the massive Mt. Fuji rising beyond old-fashioned shopping street signs, lanterns, and crisscrossing utility wires. In recent years, it has become a popular scenic photo spot on social media.

The east side of the street is an area that still retains traces of its past, when wholesalers lined the road and brought bustle to the neighborhood. The west side once flourished as one of the leading entertainment districts in the Kanto region, and even today it is a dining and nightlife area with Approx. 100 establishments, including izakayas, bars, long-established kappo restaurants, and snack bars. Another draw is being able to capture Mt. Fuji head-on within an everyday streetscape that still feels lived in. Since the surrounding area includes shopping streets and residential neighborhoods, please be mindful of local residents when taking photos or strolling. Also, taking photos from the roadway is prohibited because it is dangerous.

In March 2024, the “Shimoyoshida Tourist Information Center” opened on Honcho Street. It provides information on nearby attractions, events, gourmet food, and more.
